FABULOUS ACAPULCO -- The Original Mexican Resort City
Glittering. Glamorous. Spontaneous. Splashy. Acapulco is a city that invites superlatives. It delivers an action packed, 24-hours-a-day exuberance that makes every moment count, and an array of attractions and activities to please almost every visitor.
Acapulco is a world-class resort and a large Mexican city with plenty to offer. Inhabited by more than 1.5 million people, Acapulco lives up to its reputation as a "city that never sleeps." The to-do list is endless -- accommodations for all budgets, myriad Mexican and international restaurants, an electrifying nightlife ( lively discos to tropical nightclubs ), a typical Old World Zocalo Main Square in the middle of the city, boutiques for all tastes and all kinds of outdoor activities.
But the highlight of the Acapulco experience is a cliff near the center of town where young men jump 130 feet into what looks like a raging sea below. It's called La Quebrada, a fascinating diving performance that can be viewed during drinks or dinner at the hotels built into the hillside near the scene.
If you want to see something of Old Acapulco, you'll also want to visit the Zocalo, the main town square that is next to the Cathedral. This place is a world apart from the glitzy high-rise hotels along the tourist zone. The Cathedral is a jumble of confusing styles of architecture and decor because of a lengthy construction period, but it is beloved by its many worshipers. For more historical culture, there is also Fort San Diego, with its tidy little museum, and the Instituto Guerrerense de la Cultura, which has an archeological exhibit.
Gay travelers will find a variety of bars and discos to choose from, and several gay-owned and gay-friendly accommodations. Most of the bars, guesthouses and the gay beach are located in the Condessa area.
